Tour Itinerary
On this tour, we will travel to the southernmost district of Belize. Toledo- often called the "forgotten district" because of its remote villages and laid back life style. Along the way we will see many Mayan villages and witness these people living much as they have been for hundreds of years. Terrific views of the surrounding Maya Mountains can be seen as we make our way south.
The drive to Toledo is approx. 1.5 hours but the sightseeing is exceptional! The site that we will visit is the ruins of Nim Li Punit - which is the Mayan word for "big hat". Nim Li Punit inherited it's name from a carving on the longest of the site's twenty- six stelae, depicting a figure wearing a large headdress. Once at the site you will visit the Museum that features many precious artifacts on display and which also provides information and pictures about the customs, dress, food, dance, and language of the Maya people.
The view from the center is beautiful with the southern coastal plains laid out to the east. Nim Li Punit is set in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, within the drainage basin of the Rio Grande. From the highest point of the site, at an elevation of 67 meters, the Caribbean Sea is visible on a clear day.
We will then drive to the village of Big Falls where we will have lunch. After lunch, your guide will take you to the nearby village of Indian Creek where you get the unforgettable experience of visiting a family home in the modern Maya village. Learn firsthand the real culture of the Maya; how they live; their lifestyles; their traditions still carried on today; their food; cooking techniques; musical instruments, etc. After a full afternoon of learning another culture and completely different way of life, we will head back to the Lodge.
