HELPING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES

kids.jpg

We have wonderful guests coming to Almond Beach who often ask what they can bring down with them that can help local people and local communities in Belize.

There are two wonderful projects locally where we need your help:

SITTEE RIVER SUMMER PROJECT and EQUITY HOUSE

Here is the description of each

If you are coming to stay with us this summer you might like to slip just a few of the kids supplies, a kids story book, or some of the urgently needed supplies that are needed by Nurse Judy in to your luggage.(Please do not send things down by mail as then the local projects have to pay customs duty)!

Here are the projects:

Sittee River School is about three miles away from us at the resort. It is a vibrant place with wonderful teachers, but just over a year ago a very bad flood swept through the community destroying the library and leaving them WITH NOT ONE STORY BOOK for children. They are trying to rebuild the library this summer and are looking for donations of books for kids under 12

They also have a volunteer teacher coming from the States who will be working with them through the summer and they plan to have a summer activity program for the kids.

Here is the list of items which would really help them:

We have also been helping the school build a computer lab - the first in the area. So if you, or a friend, have a still-useable lap top computer that you could donate please bring it down with you and it will find a happy home in a beautiful little school by the Sittee River.

Our second project is Equity House which is in the village of Hopkins.

Equity House is a volunteer health centre which is run by a US trained Belizean nurse who everyone calls Nurse Judy. She and her husband retired to Belize and set up the clinic on the lower level of their home and volunteer their time and that of a host of local and foreign volunteers to immunize children, provide emergency care and stabilisation until we can get villagers to the local hospital, and basically provide all the day to day services that we take for granted will be there for us in North America.

The whole of Equity House is run by donations and every form of supplies are needed.

Here is Nurse Judy's list and again if you can pop some of them in to your luggage they would be very much appreciated:
